Conceptual Estimating with BIM

Adopting building information modeling (BIM) is a difficult and costly process. The total cost of fully implementing a BIM platform for estimating can be several hundred of thousand dollars and thousands of man hours for a medium size company. The investment only increases for larger organizations.  For the past several years, there has been a growing buzz about building information modeling.  There is enormous potential for BIM to change the way we plan, design, construct, and operate buildings.

Virtual construction allows us to visualize and simulate scheduling (4D), construction cost (5D), operating cost, and lifecycle cost like never before.  The virtual environment fosters better collaboration where all project participants can contribute to improving the project.  Many builders are currently using BIM to better understand the project (reducing RFIs and change orders) and to better coordinate sub-trades, however full adoption for estimating remains uncharted territory for most contractors.  The human art and a science of estimating will not be replaced by technology, but rather the emergence of BIM as an estimating tool will deliver giant strides in accuracy, time savings and reduction of errors.

It is easy to imagine the process of quantification completely changing with BIM.  Every contractor needs to be preparing their estimating staff for this emerging technology and tonight’s guest speaker will provide a run through some of the tools and processes that can be applied.

About our Speaker:  Andy O’Nan

Andy O’Nan has directed the business development efforts for Beck Technology since 2007 after 7 years in the concrete construction industry.  Andy has an engineering degree from Texas A&M University and has a passion for teaching young people in the industry.  He is a frequent speaker to AECO organizations and universities on the topic of BIM and other innovations in preconstruction.  Beck Technology is known for their innovative technology and services in the field of building information modeling born out of one of the industry’s most successful design and construction firms, The Beck Group.
